RABBIT BROWN, NEW ORLEANS SONGSTER

By Kevin S. Fontenot

In 1900 they were everywhere. Singing on street corners, in front of circus entrances, or just moving down the dusty roads of the South, playing anywhere a crowd might be cajoled into donating a dime to the cause.

[Verse]
B B E B
It was on the ten[th] of April, on a sunny afternoon
B B F# B
The Titanic left out Hamilton, each one as happy as bride and groom
B B E B
No one thought of danger, or what their fate may be
B B F# B
Until a gruesome iceberg caused fifteen hundred to perish in the sea

[Verse]
B B E B
It was early Monday mornin', just about the break of day
B B F# B
Captain Smith call for help from the Carpathia, and it was many miles away
B B E B
Everyone was calm and solemn, asked each other what the trouble may be
B B F# B
Not thinking that death was lurking, there upon that Northern Sea

[Verse]
B B E B
The Carpathia received the wireless: "S.O.S. In distress
B B F# B
Come at once, we are sinking. Make no delay and do your best
B B E B
Get your lifeboats all in readiness, 'cause we're going down very fast
B B F# B
We have saved the women and the children, and try and hold out to the last"

[Verse]
B B E B
You know, at last they called all the passengers, told them to hurry to the deck
B B F# B
Then they realized that the mighty Titanic was an awful fatal wreck
B B E B
They lowered the lifeboats, one by one, taking women, children from the store
B B F# B
The poor men, they were left to care for themselves, but they sure played a hero's part

[Verse]
B B E B
You know, they stood out on that sinkin' deck, and they was all in great despair
B B F# B
You know, accidents may happen most any time, and we know not when and where
B B E B
The music played as they went down, on that dark blue sea
B B F# B
And you could hear the sound, that familiar hymn, singin' "Nearer My God To Thee"

[Verse]
B B E B
They say, "Nearer my God to Thee, Nearer my God to Thee
B B F# B
Nearer my God to Thee, Nearer to Thee
B B E B
So, like a wanderer, As the sun goes down
B B F# B B
Darkness be over me," Just then the Titanic went down
