Considerado um dos grandes interprétes da alma norte-americana, captando com sensibilidade as contradições do homem urbano, iniciou sua carreira na década de 60, ao lançar, junto com o seu parceiro Art Garfunkel, o disco Wednesday Morning (1964), que continha a clássica faixa The sound of silence, tida por muitos como a melhor de seu repertório.
