[Intro]
Am G Am

[Verse]
Am G
Cold and raw the North did blow
Am Em
Bleak in the morning early
Am G
All the trees were hid in snow
Am Em
Dagl'd by winter yearly
C G
Gentleman riding o'er the heather
Am Em
Met with a farmer's daughter
C G
Her rosy cheeks and her bonny brow
Am A
They made his mouth to water

[Verse]
Am G
Quickly he saluted me
Am Em
Meaning to shew his breeding
Am G
I bowed to him right gracefully
Am Em
His courtesy exceeding
C G
He asked me where I went so soon
Am Em
And longed to begin a parley
C G
I told him, to the next market town
Am A
A-purpose to sell me barley

[Verse]
Am G
"In this purse, sweet girl," says he
Am Em
"Twenty pounds lie fairly
Am G
Seek no further one to buy
Am Em
For I'll take all your barley
C G
Twenty more would buy delight
Am Em
Your body I love so dearly
C G
If you would lay with me all night
Am A
And go home in the morning early"

[Instrumental]
Am G Am Em
Am G Am Em
C G Am Em
C G Am A

[Verse]
Am G
"If twenty pounds could buy the globe
Am Em
It's this I'd never do, sir
Am G
Or were me kin as poor as Job
Am Em
I would not raise 'em so, sir
C G
If I lay with you this night
Am Em
We'd get a young child together
C G
And you'd be gone ere the nine months end
Am A
And where should I find a father?"

[Verse]
Am G
He told me he had married been
Am Em
Fourteen years and longer
Am G
Or else he'd take me for his own
Am Em
And tie the knot much stronger
C G
I bade him then, no further roam
Am Em
But manage his wedlock fairly
C G
And keep his gold for his wife at home
Am A
And some other shall have my barley
