Nasceu em Hammersmith, Londres, Inglaterra, como filho de Fynvola Susan MacLean, uma professora, e de James Murray Grant, um artista e vendedor de carpetes que administrava uma firma de carpetes. Tem um irmão mais velho, James. Seu trisavô escocês, Dr. James Stewart, foi um assistento do missionário David Livingstone, e está relacionado com William Drummond, 4° Visconde Strathallan.
