David Kincaid

The Irish Volunteer

por David Kincaid
David Kincaid

Biografia:

David ("Dave") Kincaid (born March 21, 1957) co-founded the New York band The Brandos with Ernie Mendillo in 1985. Besides playing with The Brandos, Kincaid has released two albums of Irish music.

Kincaid's solo work has seen him dive head first into the historical melodies of the Irish-bred soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. His work interweaves two fiercely patriotic peoples' traditions into a set of songs that attempt to evoke an era of shared history that has a gravitas and mythology that continues to resonate.

CAPO 2

[INTRO]

G C G C G D G

[Verse 1]
G C G D
Me name is Tim McDonnell, I’m from the Emerald Isle,
G C G D G
I was born in Ireland’s bogs and left when but a child.
C G D
Me father fought in ’98, for liberty so dear;
G C G D G
He fell upon old Vinegar Hill, like an Irish volun teer.

[Chorus]
G C G
Then raise the harp of Erin, boys, the flag we all revere,
C G D G
We’ll fight and fall beneath the folds like Irish volun teers!
G C G
Then raise the harp of Erin, boys, the flag we all revere,
C G D G
We’ll fight and fall beneath the folds like Irish volun teers!

[Verse 2]
G C G D
When I was driven from me home by an oppressor’s hand,
G C G D G
I cut me sticks and greased me brogues, and came over to this land.
C G D
I found a home and many friends, and some that I love dear;
G C G D G
I’ll stick to them like bricks and glue says the Irish Volun teer.

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
G C G D
Now when the traitors of the south commence their warlike raid,
G C G D G
I quickly laid down my hod, to the devil went me spade!
C G D
To a recruiting office , that happened to be near,
G C G D G
And joined the good old sixty-ninth like an Irish Volun teer.

[Chorus 2]
G C G
Then fill the ranks, and march away! No traitor’s do we fear;
C G D G
We’ll drive them all to blazes, says the Irish Volun teer.
G C G
Then fill the ranks, and march away! No traitor’s do we fear;
C G D G
We’ll drive them all to blazes, says the Irish Volun teer.

[Verse 4]
G C G D
When the Prince of Wales came o’er, and made a hullaba loo,
G C G D G
Oh, everybody was turned-out in gold and tinsel too;
C G D
But then the good old sixty-ninth they didn’t like lords or peers,
G C G D G
They wouldn’t give a damn for Kings, the Irish volun teers!

[Chorus]
G C G
We love the land of liberty, it’s laws we will revere,
C G D G
“But the devil take the nobility!” says the Irish volun teer.
G C G
We love the land of liberty, it’s laws we will revere,
C G D G
“But the devil take the nobility!” says the Irish volun teer.

[Verse 5]
G C G D
Now if the traitors in the south should ever cross our roads,
G C G D G
We’ll drive them all to blazes, as Saint Patrick did the toads,
C G D
Well give them all short nooses that come just below the ears
G C G D G
Made strong and good from Irish hemp, by Irish volun teers.

[Chorus]
G C G
Then here’s to brave McClellan, whom the army now reveres,
C G D G
He’ll lead us on to victory, say the Irish volun teers.
G C G
Then here’s to brave McClellan, whom the army now reveres,
C G D G
He’ll lead us on to victory, say the Irish volun teers.

[Verse 6]
G C G D
Now fill your glasses up, me boys, a toast come drink with me,
G C G D G
May Erin’s harp and Starry Flag united ever be;
C G D
May traitors quake, and rebels shake, and tremble in their fears,
G C G D G
When next we meet the Yankee boys, the Irish volun teers.

[Chorus]
G C G
God bless the name of Washington, that name this land reveres,
C G D G
Success to Meagher and Nugent and the Irish volun teers.
G C G
God bless the name of Washington, that name this land reveres,
C G D G
Success to Meagher and Nugent and the Irish volun teers.

[Outro]
G C G C G D G
