David Jon Gilmour nació el 6 de marzo de 1946 en Cambridge, Reino Unido, y fue investido Caballero del Imperio Británico en noviembre de 2003 por su servicio a la música y su apoyo a los desfavorecidos. David Gilmour costeaba sus estudios trabajando como modelo masculino y practicaba la música como un hobbie. Cuando cursaba sus estudios en el Cambridge College of Arts and Technology conoció a Syd Barrett, el futuro fundador del grupo Pink Floyd, que luego determinaría su entrada en el grupo.
