Nirvana fue una célebre banda estadounidense de grunge, procedente de Aberdeen, Washington (no de Seattle, el mismo Kurt no aceptaba el termino grunge/seattle que era una fabricación y que la mayoría de los grupos pioneros no eran de ahí, comentando que ellos eran de Aberdeen). Con el éxito del sencillo "Smells Like Teen Spirit", del álbum Nevermind, Nirvana escaló las listas musicales en todo el mundo e inició la explosión de lo que hasta ese momento era punk alternativo y rock alternativo en la escena musical mundial
