'Owensboro' by Natalie Merchant from the album 'The House Carpenter's Daughter' (2003)

Capo 3

Verse 1

D G D
Well I lived in a town way down south by the name of Owensboro
Bm G D/F# G D/F# A
And I worked in a mill with the rest of the trash as we're often called
D
As you know

Verse 2

D G D
Well, we rise up early in the morning and we work all day real hard
Bm G D/F# G D/F# A D
To buy our little meat and bread buy sugar tea and lard

Instrumental - play the chords of the verse once through

Verse 3

D G D
Well our children they grow grow up unlearned with no time to go to school
Bm G D/F# G D/F# A D
Almost before they learn to walk they learn to spin and spool

Instrumental - play the chords of the verse once through

Verse 4

D G D
Well, the folks in town they dress so fine and spend their money free
Bm G D/F# G D/F# A D
But they would hardly look at a factory hand who dresses like you or me
D G D
Would you let them wear their watches fine let them wear their gems and pearly strings
Bm G D/F# G D/F# A D
But when that day of judgement comes they'll have to share their pretty things
Bm G D/F# G D/F# A D
But when that day of judgement comes they'll have to share their pretty things

Outro Bm G D/F# G D/F# A D
