Malcolm Kelley y Tony Oller se conocieron en 2010 durante el rodaje de la serie de televisión de Nickelodeon Gigantic, en la que sus personajes interpretaban a dos mejores amigos. Más tarde se unieron y se les ocurrió el nombre MKTO, que representa sus iniciales combinadas. Ellos explicaron cual fue la inspiración para su nombre de grupo
