Cuando lanzaron su primer disco a principios de los 70´, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers fueron incluidos dentro del nuevo movimiento punk. Pero si nos fijamos con más detalle su música tenía una energía diferente, más eléctrica, con unos riffs más cercanos a los Byrds que al movimiento en el que se les había encasillado.
