Nacido en el norteamericano estado de Tejas su infancia se vio marcada tragicamante por el sufrimiento de la poliomielitis, enfermedad que le dejó una cojera de por vida y un aspecto extraño. Afortunadamente tuvo una voz asombrosa así que, sin ver otra salida y optimista por el éxito que había tenido entre sus compañeros de hospital, se trasladó a California en su adolescencia para encontrar un futuro como cantante.
