Mark David Manders

Suicidal Pigeon

by Mark David Manders
Mark David Manders

Biografía:

From Mark's bio on his website:

"Mark David Manders has been a mainstay in Texas music for over twenty years. His music reflects his life: an intriguing dichotomy of the introspective soul searcher and the beer swilling, drunken poet. His shows are high energy and unapologetic. His songs reek of alcohol with an occasional hint of guilt. Yet there is a tapestry to his lyrics that reflects influences such as Guy Clark and Kris Kristofferson.

Mark David Manders grew up in Plano, Texas, a suburb just north of Dallas.

Intro C F C G C

C
I saw a suicidal pigeon standin’ in the middle of the street
F
Playin’ chicken with the traffic each time the light turned green.
C G
So I hollered out to him, "Hey man whatcha tryin’ to prove?" He said, "nuthin’ “.
C
So I sat down on the curb and opened up my sack
F C G
And I offered him the bun off of my Big Mac; after all they do come with three.
G
He said, “No thanks man, I’m allergic to sesame seeds”.
C
Well I knew I was gonna have to act fast
F
If I wanted to save that bird and make that conversation last.
C
The writing was on the wall, soon rush hour would begin.
G C
And that would spell disaster for my little feathered friend so I joined him.
C
That’s right I walked out in the middle of that street
F
And I sat down next to that pigeon on the warm concrete.
C
It was a very dangerous move, but I didn’t care
G
I was on a mission to save a brother in despair.
C
I said, "You’ve had a rough life I guess"
F
He said, “Whatta you think, I’m a pigeon dumbass”.
C
He said, “ My life is cursed; I don’t even have a nest
G C
And everywhere I go I leave behind a mess”. Then he told me a story.

F-G-C-F-C-G-C

C
“You know what it’s like to be a pigeon?”, he asked.
F
Well I really never thought about it, but I guess it’s pretty bad.
C
He said, “We’re at the bottom of the food chain as far as birds go,
G
And I’ve forgotten more about ugly than you’ll probably ever know.
C
People don’t take us seriously and I don’t know the reason.
F
I mean when’s the last time you heard “hey man, it’s opening day of pigeon

season“?
C
And you never see a pigeon on a stamp or a dollar bill.
G
Or on a flag or with an olive branch or some symbol of good will.”
C
I said, “Yeah you got a point”.
C
He said, “When I was younger, I fell in love with this chick.
F
She was graceful and easy to look at and had a wingspan that wouldn’t quit.
C G
When I first met her I tried to pawn myself off as a dove.
G
But eventually Mother Nature robbed me of my first love.
C
You see I started puttin’ on the weight then my feathers changed colors
F
And almost overnight I developed this foul smellin’ odor.
C
I knew it was only a matter of time before she lost interest.
G C
So I bade farewell to my fair weather princess”.

F G C F C G C

C
He said, “Ya know, a pigeon’s life is no walk in the park
F
You never feel at home no matter where you are”.
C
I said, “I know the feeling; it’s hard to fit in”.
G
He said, “So whatta you do for a living?”, I said, “I’m a musician”.
C
He said, “Man I thought I had it bad”.
C
Then I began to tell him my story and how I understood
F
About being looked down on by everyone in the neighborhood.
C
But I no sooner started talking and that little bird flew away.
G
Well I’ve lost the attention of bigger crowds so I really can’t complain.
C
But I’d like to think in some small way I played a hand
F
In helpin’ that pigeon get back on his feet again.
C
Sometimes all it takes is a sympathetic ear.
G
And sometimes it just takes a story your willing to share.
C
You know I learned a lesson form that bird and I think you’ll agree.
F
That there’s always someone out there that’s got it worse off than me.
C
When life’s got me down and I feel like quittin’,
G
I can’t help but remember this story of the suicidal pigeon.

F G C F
So spread your wings and fly, don’t be afraid to try.
C G
Pick yourself up when you fall.
F G C F
Throw out everything you know, just make it up as you go.
C G F C
There’s a little imagination in us all.
