Long Cookstown

by Malinky
Malinky

Biografía:

Malinky is a Scottish folk band specialising in Scots song.

Formed in autumn 1998, the original members were Karine Polwart from Banknock, Stirlingshire (vocals, guitar, bouzouki), Steve Byrne from Arbroath (vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin), Mark Dunlop from Garryduff, Co. Antrim (bodhrán, whistles, vocals) and English fiddler Kit Patterson.

First meeting to rehearse in early October that year, the band was largely formed to help Polwart fulfil a support slot at Edinburgh Folk Club some ten days later

[Intro]
C F C

[Verse]
C
For three long quarters I was a-weaving
F
And for my wages I was paid down
C
And for to buy a new suit of clothing
C
I made my way into long Cookstown

[Verse]
Am C
But when I got to long Cookstown
Am
Nancy Whiskey I chanced to smell
C
Says I to myself, “I'll go and taste you
G C
For three long quarters I loved you well”

[Verse]
C
So I went into an ale tavern
F
And I begged pardon for making free
C
But Nancy met me at every corner
C
“You're heart'ly welcome, young man,” says she

[Verse]
Am C
When I awoke the next morning
Am
I found myself in a strange bed
C
I tried to rise, but I wasn't able
G C
For Nancy Whiskey held me by the head

[Verse]
C
So I went down to the landlady
F
To find what reckoning there was to pay
C
“It's fifteen shillings for ale and brandy
C
And after that you may go or stay”

[Verse]
Am C
I put my hand to my pocket
Am
That was the money I did lay down
C
On looking back into my small purse
G C
All that remained was a bare half-crown

[Instrumental]
C F C Am C Am C G C

[Verse]
C
I put my head out of the window
F
A charming damsel I chanced to spy
C
With her I spent my two-and-tuppence
C
Till all remained was the fourp'nny boy

[Verse]
Am C
I will go back all to my weaving
Am
My little shuttle I will work awhile
C
And I will get some more pocket-money
G C
For Nancy Whiskey did me beguile

[Outro]
C F C Am C Am C G C
