by Harvey Andrews
Harvey Andrews

Biografía:

Harvey Andrews (born Harvey John Andrews, May 7, 1943 in Birmingham) is an English singer, songwriter, and poet.

From 1964, Andrews supported his nascent career as a singer/songwriter by working as a schoolteacher, before becoming a full-time professional musician in 1966.

Andrews has produced 15 successful albums singing his own songs, many of which have also been recorded by other artists.

His emotive The Soldier transmits the same quiet desperation of a soldier about to die "in conflict" as Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est

VERSE 1
********

I'm a man from Brummagem town
D
And a Brummie won't stay down

I've worked from dawn, to the sun next morn

With a shovel and a pick and a deal of brawn
G
I put the bullring there
D
I built Victoria square

I saw the nobs give tips with bobs
G
And I thought I'd get my share

----------------------
CHORUS
*******
C G
Well, you might say I'm nouveau
C G
Not fit to mix with gentry
C G
But if you make a show
C G
It's money gains you entry
C G
I've got my country home
C G
My carriages and horses
C G Am G
I might be nouveau, but I'm riche
D G C G Am G D G
Playing the market forces

---------------------
VERSE 2
********

Well, a labourer's just a fool
D
A pawn and a boss's tool

So, I cast my mind and what did I find?

Well, I found me a golden rule
G
Give odds of six to four
D
Ten to one the draw

They'll bet all day, they'll always pay
G
And then come back for more

----------------------
CHORUS
*******
C G
Well, you might say I'm nouveau
C G
Not fit to mix with gentry
C G
But if you make a show
C G
It's money gains you entry
C G
I've got my country home
C G
My carriages and horses
C G Am G
I might be nouveau, but I'm riche
D G C G Am G D G
Playing the market forces

---------------------
VERSE 3
********

Well, it must be god's good plan
D
So, I take it all I can

The chapel gate, the silver plate

Were bought by this god-fearing man
G
And my son will have it all
D
The pub, the lodge, the hall

He's an empire lad just like his dad
G
And he's heard his country's call

---------------------
CHORUS
*******
C G
Well, they might say he's nouveau
C G
Not fit to mix with gentry
C G
But I gave him such a show
C G
My money bought him entry
C G
He's got the best there is
C G
In uniforms and horses
C G Am G
He might be nouveau, but he's riche
D G C G Am G D G
And an officer in the forces

---------------------
VERSE 4
********

He's smart, that lad of mine
D
He'll serve his country fine

The Kaiser dreams of war it seems

But he'd better toe the line
G
Oh, war would bring us hell
D
But jobs of work as well

Be it gun or blade, it's Brummie made
G
And we live by what we sell
D
Be it gun or blade, it's Brummie made
G
And we live by what we sell

He's smart, that lad of mine
D
He'll keep out of the line
