Como o vocalista do Live, Ed Kowalczyk fachada uma das mais bem sucedidas bandas americanas pós-grunge dos anos 90, chegando a proeminência com seu segundo álbum de 1994, Throwing Copper. Com a cabeça calva e olhos intensos, Kowalczyk cortou uma figura distinta, mas o que o separou de outras 90 alt-rock foi a sua seriedade absoluta: ele adotou postura de coração aberto, do U2, como sua própria, preferindo a sinceridade de ironia.
