Biografía:
Don Cherry, llegó al jazz por un camino similar al de su mejor amigo y primer director musical, el gran Ornette Coleman. Tocó muy joven en grupos de blues en Oklahoma City, su ciudad natal, antes de trasladarse a Los Ángeles y conocer a Billy Higgins. Este baterista puso en contacto a Cherry con Coleman en 1957 y los tres tocaron junto al contrabajista, Charlie Haden en el quinteto que entonces dirigía, el pianista, Paul Bley. Soportó durante ese periodo las criticas de Miles Davis por sus excesos en la improvisaciones.
