Os três membros da banda de cordas conhecida como Carolina Chocolate Drops (Dom Flemons no violão, jarro e gaita, Rhiannon Giddens no banjo e rabeca e Justin Robinson no banjo e guitarra — Sule Greg Wilson às vezes toca na percussão) se conheceram em 2005 no Black Banjo Gathering no Appalachian State University em Carolina do Norte, puxados juntos por um mútuo amor pelo bluegrass, "jass", jug music e country e rock pré-histórico.
