Alt-J (también conocidos por el símbolo ?) se formó cuando Gwil Sainsbury (Guitarra/Bajo), Joe Newman (Guitarra/Voz), Gus Unger-Hamilton(Teclados) , Thom Green (Batería) se conocieron en la Universidad Leeds, UK, en el 2007. La banda actualmente vive en Cambridge.
Gus estudiaba Literatura Inglesa mientras que los otros tres, Bellas Artes. En su segundo año de estudios, Joe le mostró a Gwil un puñado de sus propias canciones inspiradas en su padre (que toca la guitarra) y alucinógenos
