Cross The Brazos At Waco
~ Billy Walker (1964)
Originally in the key of D.

C
On the Chisolm Trail it was midnight
G7
Carmella was strong on his mind
Because of the life he had chosen
C
Carmella had left him behind
Too long, he had been El Bandito
C7 F
Carmella had left him alone
C
But today someone brought a message
G7 C
She had been seen in ol' San An-tone

CHORUS:
F
Cross the Brazos at Waco
Ride hard and I'll make it by dawn
C
Cross the Brazos at Waco
G7 C
I'm safe when I reach San An-tone

He glanced back over his shoulder
G7
The posse was nowhere in sight
He'd sent for Carmella to meet him
C
On the banks of the Brazos tonight
She was waiting and he kept the promise
C7 F
He'd made such a long time ago
C
As he dropped the guns that she hated
G7 C
In the muddy Brazos below

Repeat CHORUS

Then the night came alive with gunfire
G7
He knew that at last he'd been found
As the Rangers badge shone brightly
C
El Bandito lay on the ground
Carmella knew he was dying
F
That all of her dreams were in vain
C
As she kissed his lips for the last time
G7 C
She heard him whisper again

Repeat CHORUS

G7 C
TAG: I'm safe when I reach San An-tone
