Ben Colder

Almost Persuaded

by Ben Colder
Ben Colder

Biografía:

Ben Colder was a pseudonym of country singer/songwriter character actor Sheb (Shelby F.) Wooley (1921-2003). As an actor, he's best known for his performances in the film "High Noon" and the 1960s TV western, "Rawhide." (The show also introduced the world to a young Clint Eastwood.) In pop music, his "The Purple People Eater" proved a "monster" hit in 1958. Wooley created the character "Ben Colder" as a character for the TV show "Hee Haw," for which he also wrote the title tune. Colder's music consisted of solid parodies of hit country tunes.

(Intro)

(Verse 1)
G C G
Last night I stumbled in to a barroom, I met
D
a girl with a pint in her purse.
G C G
She was cute as two speckled puppies, and I said,
D G
Ben, you could do worse.

(Verse 2)
G C G
Then I walked across a room full of tables, walked
D
across her table, too.
G D
And I flopped myself down in a chair and said, hi,

there.
G C D
She whispered, my name is Mabel, and all I could say,
G
was hi, there.

G
(I said, permit me to introduce myself, Ben Colder, here.

She said, it ain't been no colder here than anyplace else.)

(Chorus)
G C
I had her almost persuaded..(what happened to the doodle-
G
doodle-doo?..Piano..Thank you.) to slip..strip herself of
D
her pride.
G C G D G
Almost persuaded, to slip me a drink on the side.

(Verse 3)
Ab Db
Then we danced and we danced and we danced and we danced.
Ab Eb
That is, I thought I was dancin', somebody stepped on my hand.
Ab Db Ab Eb
Then I looked in her eyes and I saw it, the reflection of my
Ab
wedding band.

(And I thought that sure is strange, I ain't even married.

What it was it was my wrist watch.)

(Outro)
Ab Db Ab
I had her almost persuaded (once more there Argus) to come and
Eb Ab Db Ab Eb
be my own (almost persuaded) then her boyfriend came and made
Db Ab
