by Harry Chapin
Harry Chapin

[Verse]
C C7
It was just after dark when the truck started down the
F Fm C
hill that leads Into Scranton Pennsylvania, carrying
Bb Dm7/A Gm C Bb Dm7/A Gm
30 thousand pounds of bananas, Carrying 30 thousand pounds
C C7 F
of bananas. He was a young driver just out on his

second job, and he was carrying the next day’s pasty fruit for
G C C7
ev’ry-one in that coal scarred city where children play without despair
F Fm C
in backyard slag piles, and people manage to eat each day
Bb Dm7/A Gm C
about 30 thousand pounds of bananas,
Bb Dm7/A Gm C
yes, just about 30 thousand pounds of bananas.

[Verse]
C C7 F
He passed a sign that he should have seen, saying “Shift to low gear or

fifty dollar fine my friend”. He was thinking perhaps about the
C C7
warm breath woman who was waiting at the journeys end. He
F Fm C
started down the 2 mile drop, the curving road that wound
G
from the top of the hill. He was pushing on through the
C
short’ning miles that ran down to the depot; just a few more miles to

go then he’d go home and have her ease his long, cramped day away
Bb Dm7/A Gm C
and the smell of 30 thousand pounds of bananas,
Bb Dm7/A Gm C A7
yes the smell of 30 thousand pounds of bananas.

He barely made the sweeping curve that led into the steepest grade.

And he missed the thankful passing bus at 90 miles an hour.

And he said

“God make it a dream” as he rode his last ride down, he said

“God make it a dream” as he rode his last ride down. And he

side-swiped nineteen neat parked cars, clipped off thirteen

telephone poles, hit two houses, bruised eight trees and
E Bm
Blue Crossed seven people, it was then that he lost his head,
E
Not to mention an arm or two before he stopped. And he
Bm
Smeared for four hundred yards along the hills that leads into

Scranton Pennsylvania,

(spoken) and this is exactly what he said. “Boy it sure must have been

something. Just imagine thirty thousand pounds of bananas
