Nació: 1908 en Wadesboro, NC
Murió: 13 de Febrero de 1941 en Durham, NC
Suele ser citado como punto de referencia del estilo de blues de Carolina del Norte, aunque en gran medida influido por Blind Blake. Desde 1928 hasta 1934 fué músico errante y desde 1934 en adelante se ganó buena cotización actuando con Blind Gary Davis y Sonny Terry. En los últimos años treinta grabó varios discos en Nueva York y en ambas Carolinas. En 1940 grabó en Chicago, poco antes de morir repentinamente,de una infección.
