Barton Carroll

Those Days Are Gone And My Heart Is Breaking

by Barton Carroll
Barton Carroll

Biografía:

"Let’s Get On with The Illusion," sings Barton Carroll on his fourth album, Together You and I on Skybucket Records, out January 19, 2009. It’s a song about love – but a shoulder-shrug type of love that resigns itself to "I guess this is good enough." A cynical narrative runs through the album for sure, but Carroll’s sardonic wit is coupled with lightly shuffling horns, making for happy sounding songs instead of a somber ones. His tone and sleight-of-hand songwriting skill gained him critical acclaim for his previous release

[Verse]
D
Hey Danny Boy, I was thinking of our crew.
D Bm
But think just makes me sad, and that's why I write to you.
G
How do you do?
D
There's been years between us.
D
Didn't we have big ideas when our school was done?
D Bm
We'd leave our smaller minds and move out to Oregon.
G
But I was the only one
D
who went the road less taken.
D
I met a girl and I swept her off her feet.
D Bm
Made her promises I never meant to keep.
G
There's a mean streak in me.
D
Inside a storm was raging.
D
She had a form like no other girl in town.
D Bm
We had a baby boy, but I couldn't stick around.
G D D Bm
I couldn't be tied down, that's just the way I was thinking.

[Chorus]
Bm G D
Those days are gone, and my heart is aching.

[Verse]
D
Thought I deserved so much more than work could pay.
D Bm
I drove containers to BC from Monterrey.
G
It was a long way
D
on pins and needles.
D
She wrote me letters, but I never opened one.
D Bm
She met some other man and gave his name to my son.
G
I guess the damage is done,
D D Bm
and there's no way I can fake it.

[Chorus]
Bm G D
Those days are gone, and my heart is breaking.

[Bridge]
A G
Always thought my heart to be a dark horse,
A E
laying low 'til race day came along.
A G
Lately my heart's feeling like a dart board,
A7 D
and that's not something I had planned at all.

[Verse]
D
Danny, there's no limit to the steps I could retrace.
D Bm
But I got a job cooking eggs at my friend's place.
G
It's no disgrace,
D
to make an honest living.
D
And if it makes you blue, I hope I did not dwell.
D Bm
And if this gets to you, I hope it finds you well.
G
There's not much else.
D D Bm
Out here it's been raining.

[Outro]
Bm G D
Those days are here, and my heart is waiting.

[Ending]
D
