Apes of the State

Bill Collectors Theme Song

by Apes of the State
Apes of the State

Biografía:

Apes of the State is an independent Lancaster, PA based folk/pop/punk band consisting of: April Hartman (guitar, banjo, vocals, song writing), Dan Ebersole (mandolin, guitar), Mollie Swartz (violin, keys), and Max Scott (vocals, bells, guitar).

April’s first release, “All I Did This Summer Was Go to Rehab (2014),” can be self-described as equal parts cringey and genius. It documents her first ever experiments in song writing and sobriety after uprooting her life in New Jersey to start over post-rehab in Lancaster, PA.

Capo 2nd fret. I wrote this song and this is how I play it on guitar. Listen to the song for the strumming
pattern here: https://apesofthestate.bandcamp.com/track/bill-collectors-theme-song-2
There are some weird chord variations I use that really just involve taking a finger off of a
normal chord. It looks hard but really isn't, don't get nervous.

Am7

B|-1-------|

A|-0-------|
E|-x-------|

D7sus2

And the C and F chord variations just involve taking the middle finger off the normal chords:

[Intro]

F Fsus2 F D7sus2 C Csus2 C C Csus2 2x

[Verse 1]
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
When I was just a little kid they told me to dream big
C
you can do anything
Csus2 C Csus2
when I got older they told me to stop dreaming
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
start being more realistic, make the coffee do the dishes
C Csus2 C Csus2
but I can't seem to keep my head out of the clouds
F Fsus2
cause whats the point of living life
F Fsus2
to work until I die
C Csus2 C Csus2
That can't be it and if it is then I want out
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
and honestly I never had a dream of getting older
C Csus2 C Csus2
but here I am what can I do about it, tell me what to do about it now

[Bridge]
Am7 D7sus2 C Csus2 C Cadd2/E
Cause I never wanted to be every single stereotype of a white middle class 20-something pissed at the economy
Am7 D7sus2 E Am Fsus2
I never meant to be the epitome of a quarter life crisis and being a junkie didn't live up to the hype

[Solo]
During the mandolin solo the guitar plays through the intro again:
F Fsus2 F D7sus2 C Csus2 C C Csus2 2x

[Verse 2]
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
When I was just a little kid they told me I was special
C Csus2 C Csus2
Then I grew up and found out they told that to every single one of us
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
get addicted to our drugs then go away to universities
C Csus2 C Csus2
where we'll sell you dreams then make you work for free
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
They handed us an economy thats destined us for poverty
C Csus2 C Csus2
then have the nerve to call us soft and lazy for complaining
F Fsus F Fsus2
cause they're from a generation where you could be what you wanted to be
C Csus2 C C F
but baby I'm a 90's kid, only 90's kids will understand this

[Chorus]

Listen to song for strumming pattern as it changes here. I'm also doing a lot of blank percussive
noises in between the chords

(hits)
F x3 C x3 E x3 Am x3
F x3 C x3 E x3 Am x3

F C E Am Am7
got bill collectors calling us to pay back student loans
F C E Am Am7
but they can't ever find us if we throw away our phones

(Palm muted)
F C E Am Am7
then we can sit in diners, drinking coffee smoking cigarettes outside
F C E Am Am7
look in each others' eyes without cell phone lights to hide behind and

(hits)
F C E Am Am7
we can just kick off our shoes and make these sidewalks home
F C E Am Am7
we'll write songs and sing for food and we'll never be alone
(strummed)
F C E Am Am7
never be alone, never be alone, never be alone when we're with friends

[Outro]
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
and we'll never owe shit to anyone else
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
no we'll never owe shit to anyone else
F Fsus2 F Fsus2
no we'll never owe shit to anyone else
F Fsus2 F
no we'll never owe shit to anyone

C E Am Am7
