La historia fugaz de los United States of America tiene algo de sintomático de aquellos tiempos, de la gloriosa locura que había poseído a la industria; incluso a empresas tan sospechosas de conservadurismo como Columbia, que animada por el éxito de artistas a contracorriente y arriesgados como Byrds, Bob Dylan, Spirit, y un largo etcétera, entró en un periodo de fichajes alocados, de apuestas de riesgo.
