Biografía:
Tarkio foi a antiga banda de Colin Meloy, antes de formar o The Decemberists.
A Banda foi formada em Missoula, Montana , em 1996, depois de Meloy ter estudado Inglês na Universidade de Montana por alguns semestres.
Ele recrutou o tocador de banjo, Gibson Hartwell, o baixista Louis Stein e o baterista Brian Collins, após uma reunião noturna, em um café local.
Em 1997, a banda lançou de forma independente uma série de demos. Limitado a 500 exemplares
