Smile se formó a finales de los 60 por futuros miembros de Queen; Brian May en la guitarra y voces y Tim Staffell en el bajo y cantante principal, que eran miembros de la banda 1984 quienes reclutaron a Roger Taylor por medio de un anuncio que decía "Se busca un baterista del tipo de Ginger Baker/Mitch Mitchell. Un compañero de la universidad de odontología donde estudiaba Roger Taylor llamado Peter Abbey mientras que un amigo de Brian May llamado Pete Edmunds se convirtió en el roadie.
