Después de 2 años en la universidad Dave Cook se sentía sin inspiración. Dejó los libros y volvió a Fairfax, Virginia para formar My Favorite Highway con su primo Will Cook, en Enero del 2005. "Escribimos algunas canciones y pasó que todos parecían amarlas. No sabíamos que pensar, era como un suertudo accidente." dice Dave. Con su único, púlido sonido y su simpática imagen, My Favorite Highway rápidamente capturó el corazón de su escena local pretendiendo hacer lo mismo con el resto del país.
