Su nombre artístico fue dado por su flujo lírico de tiro rápido y es una referencia al famoso criminal George "Machine Gun Kelly" Barnes. Saltó a la fama después de lanzar sus primeros cuatro mixtapes, Stamp of Approval (2006), Homecoming (2008), 100 Words and Running (2010) y Lace Up (2010).
