Karan Casey (b. 1969 in Ballyduff Lower, County Waterford, Ireland) is an Irish folk singer and jazz singer, and a former member of the Irish band Solas.

Her family encouraged her to sing in the house, in a church choir and at school. At Waterford Regional Technical College she studied piano then took music at University College Dublin in 1987. [Intro]
C Cmaj7 F C Cmaj7 G C

[Verse]
Cmaj7 F
'Twas in the year of 'ninety-three
C G
The French did plant an olive tree
C Cmaj7 F
The symbol of great liberty
C Cmaj7 G C
And the people danced around it
Dm G C
Oh, wasn't I telling you
F G
The French declared courageously
C Cmaj7 F
That equality, freedom and fraternity
C Cmaj7 G C
Would be the cry of every nation

[Verse]
Cmaj7 F
In 'ninety-four a new campaign
C G
The tools of darkness did maintain
Am Em Cmaj7 F
Gaul's brave sons, they did form a league
C Cmaj7 G C
And their foes, they were dumbfounded
Dm G C
They gave to Flanders liberty
F G
And all its people they set free
Am Em Cmaj7 F
The Dutch and Austrians home did flee
C Cmaj7 G C
And the dukes they were confounded

[Verse]
Cmaj7 F
Behold, may all of humankind
C G
Emancipated with the French combine
Am Em Cmaj7 F
May laurels green all on them shine
C Cmaj7 G C
And their sons and daughters long wear them
Dm G C
May every tyrant shake with dread
F G
And tremble for their guilty head
Am Em Cmaj7 F
May the fleur-de-lis in dust be laid
C Cmaj7 G C
And they no longer wear them

[Verse]
Cmaj7 F
For church and state in close embrace
C G
Is the burden of the human race
Am Em Cmaj7 F
And the people tell you to your face
C Cmaj7 G C
That you will long repent it
Dm G C
For kings in power and preaching drones
F G
Are the cause of all your heavy groans
Am Em Cmaj7 F
Down from your pulpits, down from your thrones
C Cmaj7 G C
You will tumble unlamented

[Verse]
Dm G C
Oh, wasn't I telling you
F G
The French declared courageously
C Cmaj7 F
That equality, freedom and fraternity
C Cmaj7 G F C
Would be the cry of every nation
