Taylor) e o multi-instrumentista e engenheiro de gravação Scott Hirsch, a fusão de rock clássico, folk-pop e blues esparso do Hiss Golden Messenger em vários disfarces tem comparado Michael às lendas lo-fi Bonnie "Prince" Billy e Bill Callahan. Nascido e criado na Califórnia sulista, Michael foi inspirado a pegar no violão pelo seu pai músico, que tinha previamente tocado no Settlers, uma banda pop que uma vez abriu para John Denver.
