Hay que hacer una diferencia rigurosa entre Ronald James Padavona, mejor conocido como Ronnie James Dio y la banda fundada y liderada por este gran mago del metal, llamada Dio. La banda Dio debutó en 1983 con Holy Diver, plástico con éxitos como Stand Up and Shout, Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers, Holy Diver... En la portada del disco se veía a un demonio lanzando a un clérigo encadenado al mar.
