Biography:
Ele é filho de pais evangélicos, da Igreja Batista: Paul e Barbara Smith. Seu pai, trabalhava em uma refinaria de petróleo e sua mãe era fornecedora e secretária da Igreja.
Michael W. Smith cresceu em lar evangélico e sempre foi muito próximo de seus pais e amigos. Apesar de ser um menino ativo na Igreja, seu grande sonho era ser um jogador de Baseball (seu esporte preferido). A música, entretanto, sempre esteve presente em sua vida.
Aos 5 anos, ele compôs sua 1ª canção e já tocava piano.
