To play it like the record, plug in your reverb/chorus pedal and play around with arpeggiating your chords e.g.

G x4 D x4 C x4 Em x4
Eb ----3------------------------2------------------0---------------------------------
Bb ----------3----------------------------------------------------------0------------
Gb -------0-----0------------3-----3-----------0-------0-----------------------------
Db ----------------------0-------------------------------------------2-----2---------
Ab ----------------------------------------3-----------------------------------------
Eb ----3---------------------------------------------------------0-------------------

The bass notes are always the same but sometimes Jason plucks the high E string, sometimes the B string.
After the intro there are little twiddles like D-D-Dsus4-D so you'd go 0-3-2-3 0-3-2-3 0-3-3-3 0-3-2-3
Regardless of whatever you feel like doing, it'll sound good. It's a fun song to play, play it how you like!

G D C Em

G
I look for my keys somewhere buried in the grass
D
She's riding her tail lights over the broken glass
C Em
On a highway from nowhere, hell-bent on going back

G
Where did she come from, where do I go?
D
Each time that I fall, you know it's just another show
C Em
Well, the credits keep on rolling and I'm the last to know

G D
And it's a long, cold road tonight
C Em
And I'm wandering, without a fight

G
So tell me why you want to hurt this way
C
Why you want to hurt this way
G C
Why you want to hurt this way
G
Shine it all, don't be ashamed
C
Nothing ever stays the same
G C
Why you want to hurt this way

Em

G
Open the screen door, the transistor plays
D
An old Springsteen song, from my father's glory days
C Em
Mum's in the kitchen, tryin'a hide her swollen face

G
The old man's tying one on tight, he looks the other way
D
I hold in every word, there's just too much to say
C Em
I've got to rise above this madness, before I go insane

G
So tell me why you want to hurt this way
C
Why you want to hurt this way
G C
Why you want to hurt this way
G
Shine it all, don't be ashamed
C
Nothing ever stays the same
G C
Why you want to hurt this way

Em G Em

G
So tell me why you want to hurt this way
C
Why you want to hurt this way
G C
Why you want to hurt this way (Yeah...)
G
Shine it all, don't be ashamed
C
Nothing ever stays the same
G C
Why you want to hurt this way

Em
