Will Fyffe

I Belong To Glasgow

by Will Fyffe
Will Fyffe

Biography:

Will Fyffe was one of the first of the great Glasgow comedians and music hall performers who did his act in broad Glasgow dialect. In this sense he predated comedy performers like Jimmy Logan, Lex MacLean, Chic Murray and, of course, Billy Connolly. He drew te inspiratin for his act from what he saw around him, the infamous Glasgow "jakey" (drunkard), the wee woman in the street and the ordinary working man. This endeared him to all who heard him and gave him a followiong in Glasgow that was ledendary in its devotion.

Intro: Am D7 G

G C G D7
I've been wi' a few o' ma cronies, an’ one or two pals o' my ain;
G A7 D7 G C
We went in a hotel, an’ we did very well, an’ then we came out once again;
G C G Am D7
Then we went into anither, an’ that is the reason I'm fu’;
G C G E7 Am D7 G
We had six deoch-an-doruses, an’ then sang a chorus; just listen, I'll sing it to you:

G C G D7
I belong to Glasgow, dear old Glasgow town;
G A7 D7
But what's the matter wi' Glasgow, for it's goin' roun' and roun'!
G C G Am D7
I'm only a common old working chap, as anyone here can see,
G C G E7 Am D7 G
But when I get a couple o' drinks on a Saturday, Glasgow belongs to me!

G C G D7
There's nothing in keeping your money, an’ saving a shilling or two;
G A7 D7
If you've nothing to spend, then you've nothing to lend, why, that's all the better for you;
G C G Am D7
There’s no harm in taking a drappie, it ends all your trouble and strife;
G C G E7 Am D7 G
It gives ye the feeling that when you get home, you don't give a hang for the wife!

G C G D7
I belong to Glasgow, dear old Glasgow town;
(Slowing)
