Sarah Jane Scouten

Poverty Wind

by Sarah Jane Scouten
Sarah Jane Scouten

Biography:

On Bowen Island BC, Sarah Jane Scouten tagged along to folk music jams from an early age. Growing up in a hometown teaming with folk musicians led to many meaningful encounters all over North America, learning first-hand from her influences at jams, workshops and house concerts. Sarah has an insatiable appetite for music with a past, namely folk music of all kinds, and seeks it out wherever she goes. It’s no wonder she came to draw on traditional American music styles

[Verse]

Am E Am
Your knuckles are bare and red as the sun
Am E Am
Your head pounds like fists in the night
Am E Am
And the woman at home, she said you’re no good
Am E Am
You stepped out ‘cause you know that she’s right

[Chorus]

C Am
Well good times are found in a bottle and a zip-lock bag
F Am
And when you met it was love at first sight
C Am
And it’s trouble ahead and a mess to the left and the right
Dm E7
The devil you know, that’s where you’ve been
Am
Out on the poverty wind

[Verse]

Am E Am
It’s eight-fifty an hour, get your ass out of bed
Am E Am
Stand in line and work for the day
Am E Am
For a slave-driving bastard, no better than you
Am E Am
You’re in luck if you ever see your pay

[Chorus]

C Am
Well you’ve had it bad and it shows in the lines of your face
F Am
But it can’t get any worse now you’ve found your place
C Am
With those loud mouth, piece of shit nothings that you call friends
Dm E7
It blows hard, and you can’t win
Am
Against the poverty wind

[Verse]

Am E Am
The bar down the street smells like home, you’re supposed to escape
Am E Am
That mildew, second-hand smoke and old brown paint
Am E Am
And the kid is as restless as you were at his damn age
Am E Am
You hope that he won’t, but know that he will

[Chorus]

C Am
Well good times are found in a bottle and a zip-lock bag
F Am
And when you met it was love at first sight
C Am
And it’s trouble ahead and a mess to the left and the right
Dm E7
The devil you know, that’s where you’ve been
Dm E7
The devil you know, that’s where you’ve been
Dm E7
The devil you know, that’s where you’ve been
Am
Out on the poverty wind
