Oysterband

The Oxford Girl

by Oysterband
Oysterband

Biography:

Oysterband (or The Oyster Band, as it used to be) is an English electric folk, folk rock, and folk punk band formed in Canterbury in or around 1976.

The band is one of the few outfits still burning with the fire of punk, but managing to combine it with the ideals and knowledge of English folk music - a balancing act they've made into a fine art over the years. And they have deep roots in the U.K. folk scene, emerging from both the Whitstable Oyster Co.

I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the Oxford girl
D G A D G Bm A
I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the Oxford girl
A D
Is it true what you hear, did he do it out of fear
A G D
Was the day drawing near when the child would start to show
A D
Was it rage or shame, or the damage to his name
F#m G A
Was it something worse, does anybody know
A D
Did she pay the price, for making men look twice
A G D
Like a glimpse of paradise across the dull and bitter land
A D
Did she pass them by, did she dare to meet their eye
F#m G A
Did she scorn them all and did they understand

G D
A grief to her father, did she really leave him
G A
A lover to her brother, yes we all believe him
C G D
Temptation to look better, no better than she should be
F#m G A
Unfaithful to her lover, he always knew she would be

Bm G D
She said I never had a chance to prove them wrong
G A
My time was short, the story long
Bm G D
No I never had a chance to prove them wrong
G A
It's always them who write the song

D G A D G Bm A
I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the Oxford girl
D G A D G Bm A
I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the Oxford girl
A D
Did he go to ground, was the suitcase ever found
A G D
Did the police come storming round on a trail already cold
A D
Did he lead them a dance, did he run away to France
F#m G A
Or did he shop himself before the day was old
A D
Now she was bound to loose if she set her face to choose
A G D
They never could excuse her for stirring up their fears
A D
She was much to young, now the earth has stilled her tongue
F#m G A
You can hear the voices calling down the years

Bm G D
She said I never had a chance to prove them wrong
G A
My time was short, the story long
Bm G D
No I never had a chance to prove them wrong
G A
It's always them who write the song

D G A D G Bm A
I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the Oxford girl
D G A D G Bm A
I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the Oxford girl
