Mark Germino

From The Brooklyn Bridge

by Mark Germino
Mark Germino

Biography:

Originally a poet, Mark Germino eventually became a folk-rock artist as a means of furthering his literary aspirations. Born in North Carolina, he moved to Nashville in 1974; although he never intended to become a musician, he bought a guitar a few months later after reasoning that performing songs would be easier than reciting poetry. A trucker by day, Germino began performing in area clubs at night and signed a music publishing deal in 1981. After working as a songwriter for much of the decade

[Verse 1]
G G
From coast to coast, from dark to bright
D D
You can search for truth in a pool of light
C C
Let it keep you up all night
G D
‘til you fall asleep
G G
You can treat your neighbour like a front door mat
D D
As you fluctuate like thermostat
C C
While you swim the sewers holdin’ you back with their
G D D
water at your feet
C C C C
Oooh

[Verse 2]
G G
You can wage a war, cast a stone
D D
Hoist your flag upon a chicken bone
C C
Patrol the streets with a megaphone
G D
Every day you breathe
G G
Shouting, “Christ don’t live in an angry heart,”
D D
Or some such crap no-one’s smart
C C
enough to recognise as crap
G D D
– might as well agree

[Chorus]
C C
An' that’s the truth,
C C G G
but the day it goes on sale it becomes a lie
C C
And that’s the truth.
C C D D
You can turn your head or look it in the eye
C C
An honest man won’t sell it:
D D
He knows the truth it has an edge
C C C
Be like trying to sell the sunset baby
C G D C C G D C C G D C C
From the Brooklyn Bridge. Bridge. Bridge.
C C G D C C G D C C C C

[Verse 3]
G G
You can save the tiger, you can kill the fox
D D
You can trash the ground, you can call the cops.
C C
Push a button when it stops and
G D
Start it up again
G G
You can flip a new leaf, turn a new channel
D D
Stick a brand-new wick in a burned out candle
C C
Never let nothing you can’t handle get
G D D
Underneath your skin
C C C C
Oooh

[Verse 4]
G G
You can beat the odds, protect your interest
D D
Choose your choice in a TV set, or
C C
Try to find some common step
G D
Between a slam dance and a waltz
G G
You can turn your back on the CIA
D D
Strike a deal so big nobody gets paid
C C
Except those hired to close the deal
G D
And make sure it wasn’t false

[Chorus]
