Tom Paxton

Biography:

Tom Paxton (born Thomas Richard Paxton on October 31, 1937) is an American singer and writer of folk music whose songs have had enduring appeal (and include modern standards such as "The Last Thing on My Mind") known for a cynical, often political edge. The Paxton family moved to Bristow, Oklahoma in 1948, where Tom grew to adulthood and which he still considers home.

[Verse 1]
G7
quit your bellyaching bub
C
saying you can't afford your grub
F
saying a dollar ain't a dollar no more
G
tell me buddy what's new
G7
can't afford to buy bread no more
C
well this ain't a charity store
F
you say your kid's are hungry too
G
well it's good news for you

[Chorus]
F
you can eat dog food!
C
you really ought to try it!
G
you can fricassee it!
C
you can deep fry it!
F
flip it on over!
C
eat it any way!
G
eat along with rover,
C
3 times a day!

[Verse 2]
G7
it comes in a bag or a can
C
just the meal for a working man
F
if you're down on your luck just now
G
it'll get you through the day
G7
if you eat in the afternoon
C
you're gonna feel like baying at the moon
F
but you're complaining too soon
G
this is all I gotta say!

[Chorus]
F
you can eat dog food!
C
you really ought to try it!
G
you can fricassee it!
C
you can deep fry it!
F
flip it on over!
C
cook it any way!
G
eat along with rover,
C
3 times a day!

[Verse 3]
G7
find yourself a little vacant lot
C
clean the garbage from a little spot
F
light a fire let the coals get hot
G
ask the neighbors in!
G7
you can open up a can or two
C
make patties like the swell folks do
F
have yourself a little barbecue
G
and let the fun begin!

[Chorus]
F
you can eat dog food!
C
you really ought to try it!
G
you can fricassee it!
C
you can deep fry it!
F
flip it on over!
C
eat it any way!
G
eat along with rover,
C
3 times a day!
