The Shins

Biography:

The Shins are an American indie rock band centered around James Mercer.

The band formed in 1997, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States as a side project of Mercer (previously of Blue Roof Dinner) and drummer Jesse Sandoval, who were both members of Flake Music. The band's original lineup was Mercer (vocals, guitar), Sandoval (drums), Marty Crandall (keyboards) and Dave Hernandez (bass). Neil Langford replaced Hernandez in 1998. Hernandez returned to the band in 2003, as Langford had left the band in 2001.

[Verse]
A C A
Into this strange elastic world
C A
Pont us kindly gave up a pearl
D G
His eternal stone and mud
D D7 A
But ain't she lovely bone and blood

C A
Born of the sea
Em G A
A thousand miles away from me
D
A court of angels
G
Wards of the sun

A future forming
D D7 A
A curse undone

[Chorus]
Riff 1
F#m A F#m A
Under our softly burning lamp she takes her time
Riff 1
F#m A E
Telling stories of our possible lives
G E A
And love is the ink in the well when her body writes
Riff 2
D A D
I've been selfish and full of pride
A D
And she knows deep down there's a little child
A F#m
But I've got a good side to me as well
E D Dsus4 D
And it's that she loves in spite of everything else

[Break]
A C A Em G

[Verse]
A C A
A song in the tree has distracted her mind
C A
Some other curious form of life
D G
Has made it's presence to her known
D D7 A
And she coos so gently soft and low

C A
Her shining face in a million reflections
Em G A
in tiny raindrops that fall in a veil
D G
Over our city like notes from above
D D7 A
It overwhelms me! just aint that tough

[Chorus]
Riff 1
F#m A F#m
It's not that the darkness can't touch our lives
A
I know it will, in time
Riff 1
F#m A E
But she's no ordinary valentine
G
And now when the sun goes down
E A
she sheds a darling light.
Riff 2
D A D
I've been selfish and full of pride
A D
And she knows deep down there's a little child
A F#m
But I've got a good side to me as well
E D Dsus4 D
And it's that she loves in spite of everything else

[Outro]
A C A G D A

[Notes] Watching James Mercer play it live on youtube. He does little embellishments
which add a fair bit to the song. But they aren't really necessary if you just want
to bash it out.

For example on the A chords he will generally play:

A A/E A

(I originally thought he was playing A/G, but he's using his pinky to mute the A string.) Likewise on the C:

C C/G C

A good example of this is on here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mveay4Ff1BU

Corrections welcome. Thanks to 677sam and Locohol for the corrections.
