by The Replacements
The Replacements

Biography:

The Replacements are an alternative rock group that formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1979. The band originally started off as a hardcore punk outfit but began to incorporate folk and power pop influences in their sound. They become one of the leaders of the early alt-folk set and one of the flagship bands of the American 80s post-punk scene, being as well a major influence on 90s indie rock.

The band's best known lineup consisted of Paul Westerberg (vocals, guitar), Bob Stinson (guitar), Tommy Stinson (bass) and Chris Mars (drums).

Okay, there may be a few lyrics that don't match up with what's printed online, but HEY.
It's The Replacements. It's not like Paul always sings his lyrics the same way everytime, anyway.

The verses are just arpeggiated Em / Cmaj7 chords, and the strum pattern is similar to this:
e|-----------------------------------------|
B|----------------------------0------------|
G|----------------------0-------0----------|
D|------2-----2---2---2-----2-----2--------|
A|----2-----2---2---3-----3----------------|
E|--0-----0--------------------------------|

Now here's the chords in the song:

The Ledge

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7

[Verse 1]
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
All eyes look up to me
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
High above frozen streets
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
Heed no bullhorn when it calls
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
Watch me fly and die, watch me fall

[Chorus]
C
I'm the boy they can't ignore
D
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
C B
All the love sent up high to pledge

Won't reach the ledge

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7

[Verse 2]
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
Wind blows cold from the west
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
I smell coffee, I smell doughnuts for the brass
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
A girl I knew once years ago
Em Cmaj7 Em
Is tryin' to be reached on the phone

[Chorus]
C
I'm the boy she can't ignore
D
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
C B
All the love sent up high to pledge
C
I'm the boy she can't ignore
D
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
C B
All the love sent up high to pledge

[Interlude]

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7

[Solo]

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7

C D C D

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7

[Verse 3]
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
Priest kneels silent, all is still
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
Policeman reaches from the sill
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
Watch him try, try his best
Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
There'll be no medal pinned to his chest

[Chorus]
C
I'm the boy they couldn't ignore
D
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
C
I'm the boy they couldn't ignore
D
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
C D
I'm the boy for the last time in my life
C
All the love that they pledge
D Em Cmaj7
For the last time will not reach the ledge

Em Cmaj7 Em Cmaj7
