Four years of hard work!

This month of May we celebrated four years on the air. We continue working on the dissemination of this wonderful instrument, thank you for participating in our story!

161 Artist   98 Music   112 Tab Tab
All, this is my first tab and is borrowed pretty heavily from the John Hiatt original
tab but that didn?t have the little Intro twirly bit James does and I still struggled with
some of the chord shapings because I suck at barre chords (until my fingers get more used to stretching).
So I did a beginner version as well using a capo to make things a bit
easier without those barre chords. Had to do a LOT of music theory to work out what notes are in each
chord and as my maths teachers used to say, will show my workings of that out at the bottom if anyone
is even vaguely interested. For those who are better guitarists than me (and that wouldn?t be hard),
and already know their music theory, sorry for the
rambling but wanted something simple here because that is what I need at my level so hope it helps other
beginners.
Guess the proof is in the hearing anyway and the capo version does have some an octave
higher just because I find that easier to make that shape.

Anyhow?hope you enjoy.

James Reyne does a lot of palm muting of the chords in the Intro and the verse (but not
the chorus) which is about every third strum or so. Listen to the recording for more
refined timings of those mutings if you want to be exact to whatever recording version you have.

Original barre chord version is Standard tuning (EADGBE)
Chords:
A (x02220)
F#m (224422)
D (xx0232)
E (022100)
G#m (446644)
Dsus4 (xx0233)
C#m7 (x4x454)

Intro twirly bit:

E---------------|
B-------2h3p2---|
G-----2---------|
D---------------|
A-1-------------|
e---------------|

Followed by F#m (I start this with an upstroke) then repeated twirly bit followed by
F#m, then A and F#m chords repeated twice before lyrics

VERSE
A
I stood up for the first time
F#m A F#m
When I was just eleven months old
A F#m
And ever since that day mama said
A F#m
I never done what I was told
A F#m
I never stood for nothing too much
A F#m
All through my schooling years
D E
But I stood as much as I could stand
A F#m
And I guess that?s why I?m still standing here

CHORUS:
E
And then I stood up
F#m G#m A D Dsus4
When love called my name, baby
E
I stood up
F#m G#m A D D
Even when that love was all in vain, baby
E
I got stood up once
F#m G#m A D D
And left out in the pouring rain, baby
E
And then I stood up
D A F#m A F#m
And I?ll do it again

VERSE (same chord pattern as verse above)
I guess I never understood what she could do
With all that flaming red hair
But I could not stand the heat in her kitchen
So Jack, I got on out of there
I stood up
To get a pack of cigarettes
Down at the corner store
Now she?s standing in some corner of my heart
Behind a kitchen screen door?whoaaaa

CHORUS

BRIDGE
F#m C#m7
I don?t know about you
D
But there?s a lot of things I never stood up to
E
Even when I turned and walked away
E
I guess that?s why---I
A F#m A F#m
I?m standing on my own two feet today

VERSE (same chord pattern as verse above)
They gave last call for alcohol
And no one has to carry me home
You see, I only work here now man
My drinking days are long gone
I couldn?t stand up after one, NO!!
Til twenty had me down on the floor
Now the first one doesn?t get you
Even though I?m still the last one out the door

CHORUS (ends with last chord of Intro twirly bit and A chord)

Now to the beginner version with a capo that I use:

Capo second fret (F#BEAC#F#). Fingering below relative to capo

Chords:
Original A becomes a G (320003)
Original F#m becomes an Em (022000)
Original D becomes a slightly modified C (x3201x)
Original E becomes a D (yes, it?s an octave higher E but still sounds nice) (xx0232)
Original G#m becomes a F#m (can use barre chord 244222 or go octave higher and use
xx4222 but I use 20x222 using my thumb for top string and slightly dull the ?D? string with
the tip of my finger resting against the side of it as it barres across the other 2nd fret notes)
Original Dsus4 becomes a Csus4 (x3301x)
Original C#m7 becomes a Bm7 (x20202)

All the actual notes important to each chord (showing my workings!) is down below.

So with a capo on 2nd fret that changes it to
Intro twirly bit:

E---------------|
B-------0h1p0---|
G-----0---------|
D---------------|
A---------------|
e-3-------------|

Followed by Em (I start this with an upstroke) then repeated twirly bit followed by Emm,
then G and Em chords repeated twice before lyrics
