Cardiacs

The Alphabet Business Concern Home Of Fadeless Splendour

by Cardiacs
Cardiacs

Biography:

Cardiacs, originally called Cardiac Arrest, was an English band formed in 1977 and led by Tim Smith (1961-2020). Noted for their complex, varied and intense compositional style and for their eccentric, theatrical stage shows, they have been hailed as an influence by many newer groups and artists.

As well as Smith, around 23 musicians were part of the Cardiacs over the years, including Smith's brother, Jim, and multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Cutts, who married Tim Smith in 1983.

E B F#m A
Hail majestic corporate light
E F#m C#m F# E A
Heaven born and ever bright
E B F#m A
How our spirit like the waves
E F#m C#m F# E A
As the breath of thine awakes
E B A B
And now the night of weeping shall be
E A A E A
The morn of song
B C#m F# A E F#sus4 F#m
Ah! We are those whose thunder shakes the skies
D A C#m F# E F#
The thin spun life

E B F#m A
Home of fadeless splendour
E F#m C#m F# E A
Of flowers that bear no thorn
E B A
Here may the blind and hungry come
B E A A E A
And light and food receive
B C#m F# C#m F#m A
Here mighty springs of consolation rise
E F#sus4 A
To cheer the fainting mind
F#sus4 C#m F# C#m F#
And re-creation find

E B F#m A
So overcome thy fear
E F#m C#m F# E A
And burst into sudden blaze
E B A B
Come blind fury with abhorred shears
E A A E A
And slit the thin spun life
B C#m F# A E F#sus4 F#m
Ah! Sobbing with their human sort of wail
D A C#m F#
Thy justice fear

E B F#m A
Walk in shadow, walk in dread
E F#m C#m F# E A
Loosefish walk as like one dead
E B F#m A
One drop in a winter sea
E F#m C#m F# E A
No more to rise forever
E B A B
Anything down there about your souls
E A A E A
Will smash the sun alight
B C#m F# A E F#
Ah! Yield week in, weak out from morn to night
E F#sus4 A
Feelers from across the sea
F#sus4 C#m F# C#m F#
Come crawling over thee

E B F#m A
One drop in a winter sea
E F#m C#m F# E A
No more to rise forever
E B F#m A
One drop in a winter sea
E F#m C#m F# E A
No more to rise forever
E B A B
Come blind fury with abhorred shears
E A A E A
And slit the thin spun life
B C#m F# A E F#sus4 F#m
Ah! Sobbing with their human sort of wail
D A C#m F# E A
The thin spun life

We are those whose thunder shakes the skies
E F#sus4 A
Whose eyes this atom globe surveys
F#sus4 C#m F# C#m F#
Thy justice fear, hooray!
