The Snake

by Al Wilson
Al Wilson

Biography:

Allen LaMar "Al" Wilson (June 19, 1939 – April 21, 2008) was an American soul singer best known for the hit song "Show and Tell", and in the UK for the earlier hit, "The Snake"

Wilson was born in Meridian, Mississippi. He showed little interest in education but performed in school plays, sang in talent shows and won first prize in a local art contest. Wilson began his career at the age of 12 leading his own spiritual quartet and singing in the church choir, even performing covers of country and western hits as circumstances dictated.

[Verse 1]

Dm
On her way to work one morning
Down the path along side the lake
A7
A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake
Dm
His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew
A7
"Poor thing," she cried, "I'll take you in and I'll take care of you"
Dm
"Take me in tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
A7
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake

[Chorus 1]
(same chords progression)

She wrapped him all cozy in a comforter of silk
And laid him by her fireside with some honey and some milk
She hurried home from work that night and soon as she arrived
She found that pretty snake she'd taken to had bee revived
"Take me in, tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake

[Verse 3]

D#m
She clutched him to her bosom, "You're so beautiful," she cried
A#7
"But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died"
D#m
She stroked his pretty skin again and kissed and held him tight
A#7 D#m
Instead of saying thanks, the snake gave her a vicious bite

"Take me in, tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
A#7
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake

[Chorus 2]

Em
"I saved you," cried the woman
"And you've bitten me, but why?
B7
You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die"
Em
"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin
B7 Em
"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in

"Take me in, tender woman
Take me in, for heaven's sake
^ B7 Em
Take me in, tender woman," sighed the snake
