INTRO: A A D A A A E A x 2

A D E
They come to town when the war is over
A E A
Dirty boots in the middle of the night
A D E
Trolling the bars, hitting on the soldiers
A E A
Boys give it up without a fight
A A D E
They say, “Hey, boy, how about your place?
A E A
I know you really want to take me home”
A D E
Drop the bags off on the bedroom floor
A E A
They make love with the lights on, saying

D A
“I’m a carpetbagger, baby
D A
I’m coming to your town
E
I’m going to treat you kind
E
I’m going to rob you blind
E
I’ll smile all the time
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A E A

A D E
Sally could have had any one of the boys
A E A
But she couldn’t love no one she could not control
A D E
Friend of mine and her got married
A E A
I don’t hear too much from them anymore
A D E
Last I heard, he had a rope around his neck
A E A
Dragging around the grocery store
A D E
Carrying her bags and pushing down the aisles
A E A
Saying, “I ain’t got no home in this world anymore”

D A
“I’m a carpetbagger, baby
D A
I’m coming to your town
E
I’m going to treat you kind
E
I’m going to rob you blind
E
I’ll smile all the time
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A E A

A D E
They come to town when the party’s over
A E A
Books been written and truths been tried
A D E
They’ll take it all if the door’s left open
A E A
Steal the nose right from under your eyes

D A
Singing, “I’m a carpetbagger, baby
D A
I’m coming to your town
E
I’m going to treat you kind
E
I’m going to rob you blind
E
I’ll smile all the time
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A D E
Whoa, yeah
A E A
