[Intro]
D G D G
[Verse 1]
A D G
Did you see our brother
Asus4 A
He was here the other day
F#m Bm Em
But he only came to say that he was leaving
A D G
Did you see his lady
Asus4 A
She was looking where he'd gone
F#m Bm Em
But she wasn't letting on that she was grieving
A D
She's bound to go
G A D
Perhaps she'll find him waiting for some boat in some city far away

A G D
She's bound to go

[Verse 2]
Asus4 D G Asus4 A
Lately I remember afternoons of smoke and wine
F#m Bm Em
There was nothing we could find but peace and pleasure
A D G
And long ago he told me
Asus4 A F#m Bm Em
That he wanted just to be on his way across some sea no man can measure
A D
He won't be back,
G A D
And the sun may find him sleeping in the dust of some ruin far away
A G D
He won't be back

[Chorus 1]
G D
Early today as I watched while the skyline was shaking
Asus4
I heard a rumbling
G D
Early today the mechanical city was waking
Asus4
And I ran out stumbling, mumbling
Asus4 A
Out through the laughter of children and dogs

[Verse 3]
A D G
Do you know the mad man.
A
Yes he lives upon the hill.
F#m Bm Em
And they say haunted voices fill his head with warnings.
A D G A
Saying to a shadow, that the time is drawing near.
F#m Bm Em
When the world must disappear, one of these mornings.
A D
Maybe he'll go.

G A D G D G A
Perhaps he'll take his shadow and be off to find his brother far away.
A G D
Maybe he'll go.

[Chorus 2]
G D
Early today, as my friend the policeman was sneering.
Asus
I heard a rumbling.
G D
Early today as the men of my office were leering.
Asus
I ran out stumbling, mumbling,
Asus4 A
Out through the laughter of children and dogs.

[Verse 4]
A D G
Did you see our brother
Asus4 A
He was here the other day
F#m Bm Em
But he only came to say that he can't breathe here
A D G
Did you see his lady
Asus4 A
She was reaching for his hand
F#m Bm Em
Just as if to tell her man that she can't either
