Chadwick Stokes

Mother Maple

by Chadwick Stokes
Chadwick Stokes

Biography:

It takes a certain type of musician to hop freight trains and barrel across the vastness of North America with his brother and cousin. Especially for an artist who, just years before, sold out Madison Square Garden for three consecutive nights. CHAD “CHADWICK” STOKES is anything but a typical rock star. So, there was the singer-guitarist for bands Dispatch and State Radio, wading across a river to escape the chasing railroad bulls and hanging in the different down and out jungles with other traveling folks.

Long before I knew you I was tumbling back home

I was turning into stone
Am F C
And you run, and you run, and you run, and you run got to pick up your knees

[Verse 2]

C
As long as she don't kill us we'll be stronger in the end

And every boy out there on Bogle Street is dying to get in
Am F C
And you run, and you run, and you run, and you run got to pick up your knees
C
And you run, and you run, and you run, and you run got to pick up your knees

[Verse 3]

C
She gave me room to amble, with brier and bramble

And the old red door was always open to the angels and the devils
F G C Am F
And nobody was young when they heard her mouth when she told us everything we never knew
Dm G
It was the song of the grande madame

[Chorus]

Am F
Mother Maple I drink from your syrup
C G
And I am thankful for the blood that you bleed
Am F
We're in the sugar shack making our porridge
C G
And you have given us more than we need
Am F
And I see more and more how you suffer, and not for nothing
C G
But you can't often get the air that you need
F C G
When your roots leave the earth I will stay and get my honey from the trees

[Verse 4]

C
Laughter in the cottage house, could last for hours long

When we heard the last gasp we all gave up our mother's song
Am F
And you run, and you run, and you run, and you run, and you run

[Chorus]
