Cathie Ryan - Eveline

Capo 3

[Intro]
G

[Verse 1]

It's early Sunday morning, her father's fast asleep
D Am Em D
She's staring out the window at the dark and lonely street
G
Put the kettle on the fire, wake the children up for mass
D Am Em
His drunken cursing last night means another week has passed
Am D
The next will be the same

[Chorus]
G
It's alright, Eveline, let the ship sail away
Am D
Hold on to the railing and cry
G
It won't be the last one, I promise you that
D Em
He's only telling you lies
D G
He's only telling you lies

[Verse 2]

Where is you sailor, Evy? Are you killed with regret?
D Am Em D
Didn't he know your heart then? Did he make you forget
G
That you have always seen yourself in your father's bitter eyes?
D Am Em
Your mother willed her life to you long before she died
Am D
Her madness calls your name

[Chorus]
G
It's alright, Eveline, let the ship sail away
Am D
Hold on to the railing and cry

It won't be the last one, I promise you that

They're only telling you lies

They're only telling you lies

[Verse 3]
G
I knew you were no fiction when he left you on the shore

Waiting for a ship to come, praying for strength to leap

Those leaps are terrifying, the small steps make us free

The small steps make us free

[Chorus]

It's alright, Eveline, let the ship sail away
Am D
Hold on to the railing and cry
G
It won't be the last one, I promise you that

They're only telling you lies
