Cary Ann Hearst

Whos Gonna Raise These Babies

by Cary Ann Hearst
Cary Ann Hearst

Biography:

Cary Ann Hearst has a big mouth and a sparkle in her eye. She's a compact but powerful piece of artillery and she sings like jesus’ little probate. If she comes to your town you should come out to listen. She has a snappy turn of phrase, a simple sense of melody and primeval sense of guitar rhythm that she learned by listening through the glass windows on Broadway as a young girl in Nashville, Tennessee.

Hearst spent her formative adult years going “coastal” in Charleston, SC.

Who's Gonna Raise These Babies?
Shovels & Rope
Cary Ann Hearst featuring Michael Trent

Chords: C F G C in your best boom chuck

Verse 1
My baby's daddy never came to hear me sing
when I asked him for some money it's the same old thing
he ain't got no dough
spent it all on blow
and he said he had to pawn my wedding ring
He ain't never offered no ring to me and I can see he had a long row to hoe
Somebody gotta do it he ain't gonna do it guess i'm doing it by myself

Chorus
Who's gonna raise these babies? These babies that we make?
Who's gonna teach them all the things that they need to know some day?
to be patient and kind, sharp as an arrow, sticking pretty close to the straight and narrow
who's gonna raise these babies these babies that we make?

Verse 2
The man that I was married to for 18 years
packed his get out bag and drank 18 beers
left a dish in the sink for every year
that's the last I saw of him
last I heard he was on the run cause he robbed a Little Piggy with a stolen gun
wouldn't you know, my teenage son wants to grow up to be just like him

Chorus
Who's gonna raise these babies? These babies that we make?
Who's gonna teach them all the things that they need to know some day?
to be patient and kind, sharp as an arrow, sticking pretty close to the straight and narrow
who's gonna raise these babies these babies that we make?

Verse 3
My big brother raised me all by himself
My daddy died and my mother left
He worked the railroad to provide our needs
he lied about his age he was just 16
Now he's married to a girl from Bowling Green
She was a central Kentucky rodeo queen
I’m rocking the baby in the rocking chair
while they pick weeds in the evening air

Chorus
Who's gonna raise these babies? These babies that we make?
Who's gonna teach them all the things that they need to know some day?
to be patient and kind, sharp as an arrow, sticking pretty close to the straight and narrow
who's gonna raise these babies these babies that we make?

who's gonna raise these babies these babies that we make?
