{INTRO:] C F C G C Dm C G F C F Dm7 G C Dm C G C

[VERSE 1:]
G Am G
As I roved out one evening fair
C F
By the verdant braes of Skreen
C G Am G
I set my back to a hawthorn tree
C F Dm7 G
To view the sun in the West Country
C G C
And the dew on the forest green

[VERSE 2:]
G Am G
A lad I spied by Abhann's side
C F
And a maiden on his knee
C G Am G
And he was as dark as the very brown wood
C F Am G
And she all whey and wan to see
C G C
All whey and wan was she

[VERSE 3:]
G Am G
"Oh sit you down on the grass," he said
C F
"On the dewy grass so green
Am G F G
For the wee birds all have come and gone
C F Am G
Since I my true love have seen," he said
C G C
"Since I my true love have seen"

[INSTRUMENTAL:] C F C G C Dm C G F C F Dm7 G C Dm C G F C

[VERSE 4:]
Am F G
"Then I'll not sit on the grass," she said
C F
"Nor be a love of thine
Am G F G
For I hear you love a Connaught girl
C F Am G
And your heart's no longer mine," she said
C G Am
"And your heart's no longer mine"

[VERSE 5:]
G C G Am G
"Oh, but I will climb a high, high tree
C F
And I'll rob a wild bird's nest
Am G F G
And back I'll bring what I find there
C F Am G
To the arms that I love the best," she said
C G Am
"To the arms that I love best"

[OUTRO:] C F C G C Dm C G C
